LMS PTO MEETING MINUTES

MAY 13, 2014

Called to order 2:42p

MEMBERS PRESENT

Tina Gourlay, Megan Green, Krista Wolf, Jennifer Swanson, Jason Messenger, Sandra Blough, Judy Thomas, Julia Pechtel.

SECRETARY’S REPORT – Megan Green

Last month’s minutes were presented at this meeting, as Megan wasn’t at the last meeting. S. Blough made a motion to accept the minutes.  Vote was unanimous to accept.

TREASURER’S REPORT – Julia Pechtel

Field trip expenses  are still coming in. The income and expense report was reviewed, and a budget for the next school year was proposed.

Battle of the Books is approved for 2 more years of funding from LEF, so the PTO budget can remain the same for now, but in 3 years we will need to find funding.

The PTO was over budget this school year because of the one-time expense of paying for non-profit status and incorporating, otherwise the PTO would have stayed within budget.

K. Wolf made a motion to accept the budget for the next school year. Budget passed. None opposed.

Books, since the PTO is now a corporation, have to be closed by June 30.

VOLUNTEER COORDINATORS’ REPORT – Jennifer Swanson & Joni Miller

Still need volunteers for Friday’s event; might not be able to get the help. Key Club & National Honor Society members may be able to help, but in general the administration doesn’t  like mixing high school and junior high students at events. Handful more needed; Teachers, perhaps?

NEW BUSINESS – TINA GOURLAY

The proposed PTO Board for the 2014-2015 school year is:

President: Tina Gourlay

Vice President: Krista Wolf

Treasurer: Julia Pechtel

Secretary: Jen Meyer

Volunteer Coordinator: Joni Miller & Kelly Wilford

M. Green made a motion to approve the new Board; passed unanimously.

We have already received one suggestion for a long-term project for the PTO, after the request was made in the Lancer.

OLD BUSINESS

Staff Appreciation Week went well. This is the last year for Shelley Taylor to coordinate the event.

THANK YOU, SHELLEY, FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK. YOU WILL BE MISSED.

STAFF REPORTS

6th is testing in the lab. J Thomas gave report. They’re starting novel study in language arts, social studies is Africa, then Asia. Field trip next week to MI Adventure.

7th grade picnic is next Friday. Thursday and Friday are growth and development unit. Geography is creating a state. Brainstorming is best part of it. Cultural project. S Blough gave report.

8th grade. No teachers, so Jason did their thing. Trip to Notre Dame on the 22d, picnic on 23d. NWEA map testing at end of year. Did well as whole on explorer testing. Good indicator toward achievement as a junior. Several students scored very high.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT – Jason Messenger

Testing is very important; it gives us an idea of where our students are at academically. Wrapping up school improvement plan for next year. Highlights are common core math pilot, more writing. Waiting on standards for science material, so will be getting new science materials.  Notre Dame Board of Trustees member came to talk. 84 pies for $840 fundraised. Fun day on Friday will raise additional monies.

In the fall, the Middle School will be doing a drug education night for parents, where police will come in and give information.

Multiplication facts and reading (especially for boys) over the summer is very important for middle school success.

Thanks to Megan and Jennifer for serving on the board.

Next PTO meeting will be in October.
